Special Olympics London congratulates Sgt Mark McGugan of the London Police Service on his induction into the Special Olympics Ontario Hall of Fame. As a driving force behind the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, Mark has volunteered countless hours to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics. He pioneered a team approach to the torch run events, which allowed for greater involvement amongst his peers. For anyone who remembers the sea of red entering the stadium at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, then you remember seeing the work of Mark McGugan. That moving, half-mile long group of police running into Western University, was due to Mark’s extraordinary efforts. Here in London, our athletes have had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Mark as he supports them at many events. For all his efforts, we thank Mark and again congratulate him on this well-deserved honour.

Sgt. Mark McGugan, (holding plaque) is surrounded by well-wishers at the Special Olympics Ontario Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.

Special Olympics London was delighted to receive a cheque for $80 from Mary Hickey’s JK/SK class at St. Mark’s School. The class wanted to do something for their community and the project they chose was the Special Olympics Active Start program, which is held at their school each Tuesday evening in the fall and winter.  Janine Shantz accepted the cheque and was treated to a dance performance by the class as a part of the cheque presentation. Thank you to these young philanthropists!
